Days since your last oil change: a service counter
Car maintenance is miles or months, whichever comes first. Your dashboard tracks miles. Here is how a day counter covers the months half.
Your car’s maintenance schedule has two columns: miles and months. The dashboard tracks one of them. The other one sits in a manual in the glovebox and quietly runs out anyway, usually on the car you drive least.
TL;DR
Manufacturer schedules are written as “X miles or Y months, whichever comes first.” Nothing on your phone watches the months. Put a count-up event on the time-based items (oil for low-mileage cars, brake fluid, coolant, tire age, inspection, registration), name each event so the number is readable at a glance, and photograph the receipt with the odometer showing before you reset the counter. Otherwise you lose the service history the moment you tap reset.
The half of the schedule nobody watches
Open almost any owner’s manual and the service table has two numbers per row. Change the oil at 7,500 miles or 6 months. Flush the brake fluid at 45,000 miles or 24 months. Replace the coolant at some mileage or 2 to 3 years. The instruction is always “whichever comes first,” and for a large share of drivers the months arrive well before the miles.
That matters more than it sounds. If you drive 4,000 miles a year, your oil-life indicator may never turn amber, but the oil has been sitting in a cold engine collecting condensation for eighteen months. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air whether or not the car moves. Tires age on the sidewall, not the tread: NHTSA’s tire safety guidance explains how to read the DOT code on the sidewall to find the week and year a tire was built, and a number of manufacturers put a calendar limit on tire age regardless of how much tread is left.
The odometer is a good tracker for the mileage column and completely blind to the other one. A day counter is the opposite. Used together they cover the whole table.
What belongs on a counter, and what does not
Not every maintenance item is worth an event. Sort them by which column is likely to trigger first for your driving.

Two rules keep this from turning into a chore. First, check your own manual rather than a generic interval from the internet, because the numbers vary a lot between a 2012 sedan and a 2024 hybrid. Second, cap yourself at five or six events. A counter you glance at is useful. A counter with nineteen entries is a spreadsheet, and you will stop opening it.
Setting it up
1. Take the months column out of the manual
Sit in the car for ten minutes with the manual and write down only the time-based numbers. You want a short list: item, interval in months, and the date it was last done. The last-done dates are usually recoverable from receipts, an email inbox search for the shop’s name, or the sticker in the corner of the windshield.
2. One event per item, named so the number reads clearly
In Day Counter, add a count up from a date event for each item and set the date to the last service. Name them for the thing being measured, not the task: “Oil: days since change” rather than “Change oil.” When you open the app you want to read “Oil: 214 days” and immediately know where you stand against a 180-day interval.
An emoji per event does more work here than it does anywhere else, because you are scanning a list of similar-looking rows. A drop for oil, a tire, a wrench for the annual service, a document for registration.
3. Photograph the odometer before you reset
This is the step that separates a useful log from a number. A “days since” counter has one flaw: the moment you reset it, the previous interval is gone. You no longer know that the last oil change came at 11 months and 6,200 miles, which is exactly what a mechanic or a buyer will ask.
So before you edit the date, attach a photo of the receipt or the dashboard with the odometer visible to the event. 4. Reminders that land before you need the appointment
A notification on the day you hit 180 days is too late, because you still have to call a shop and find a slot. Set the reminder to fire roughly three weeks earlier. Three weeks is enough to book without paying for urgency, and short enough that you have not forgotten by the time the appointment arrives.
5. Widget for the one that bites you
You get one free single-event widget, so spend it on whichever item you have historically let slide. For most people with a second car or a weekend car, that is the oil. For anyone who has ever been pulled over for an expired sticker, it is registration.
A worked example: the second car
The clearest case for this whole approach is a household with two cars, one of which does 90 percent of the driving.
The daily driver is fine. It racks up miles, the oil life indicator does its job, and the shop puts a sticker on the windshield. The second car does 3,000 miles a year of school runs and hardware store trips. Nothing on it ever triggers a mileage threshold. Its oil is four years old, its brake fluid was last changed by the previous owner, its tires have full tread and a 2017 date code, and the inspection lapsed in March.
None of that is negligence. It is a tracking gap: the only maintenance signal the car sends is mileage, and it does not generate any. Four count-up events fix it in about fifteen minutes, and after that the car tells you something even when it is parked.
When a counter is the wrong tool
If your car has a connected service app that already tracks time-based items and books appointments, use that instead. Duplicating it will just mean two sources of truth that disagree by a week.
A counter also does not help with anything condition-based. Brake pads, tread depth, a noise that started last Tuesday, a warning light: none of those care what day it is. Time counters cover items that expire on a calendar. Everything else needs eyes and ears, and a day count is not a substitute for the inspection you were going to skip.

FAQ
Can a day counter replace the dealer’s service reminder? It covers the calendar half of the schedule, which is the half most reminders handle poorly. It cannot see mileage, warning lights, or recalls, so keep whatever official channel your manufacturer uses.
What if I have no idea when the last service happened? Search your email and card statements for the shop’s name, check for a windshield sticker, or ask the shop to look you up. If nothing turns up, book the service now and start the counter from that date rather than guessing.
How many maintenance events should I track? Five or six is a practical ceiling for one car. Track the items where the months column realistically arrives before the miles column, and let the odometer handle the rest.
