Sunday, March 12, 1989

On March 12, 1989, Tim Berners-Lee — then a software engineer at CERN — submitted a proposal titled 'Information Management: A Proposal.' His manager scribbled 'vague, but exciting' on the cover. The Web was born.

01

Why this date?

  • Berners-Lee built the first browser, the first web server, and the first website — all by 1990.
  • The first website, info.cern.ch, is still online in restored form.
  • CERN put the Web into the public domain on April 30, 1993.
  • There are now over a billion websites — though many sit idle.
